VISIT SALERS AMONG THE

Greetings from unique volcanic France... AUVERGNE, that should be on your radar in 2017.
With a lot to experience and a small village among the "Plus beaux villages de France" we’re taking you on a day excursion today to Salers. We'll gladly lead you from luxury retreat "instants d'Absolu" to this so picturesque medieval village!

VISIT AMONG THE "PLUS BEAUX VILLAGES DE FRANCE" (MOST BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES OF France)... Salers, a medieval jewel

Shaded by the Cantal mountains, in the heart of the Natural Park of Auvergne's Volcanoes, discover the stone-tiled roofs and ancient ramparts of Salers, one of the « Plus Beaux Villages de France ». And actually the village where the association of such character villages all started from.

Among such picturesque french villages, you may already have walked through Conques, Ménerbes or Locronan. In Salers, you will also enjoy walking the cobblestone streets of the medieval village. Whether it's a coat of arms, a metal gate, conical "pepperpot" roofing, or a gothic doorway, the charm of this Auvergne village is intact. Indeed, Salers has never lost the importance it acquired during its golden era, in the XVth and XVIth centuries, under the leadership of its « officiers de Justice ». This is especially striking at Place Tyssandier-d'Escous, where you'll notably find the town hall and the Maison de la Ronade. These Renaissance buildings, built in the strict style of Haute Auvergne, interact with one another above a monumental fountain from which wine used to flow during the "Fête de la Nativité de la Vierge" (celebration of Mary's birth).

Salers placed its possessions behind its ramparts and succeeded in resisting marauders, and its two gateways ― the Porte du Beffroi and the Porte de la Martille ― still exist ; but the Revolution saw to it that the importance of this Auvergne village evaporated.

Unchanged in appearance, Salers has devoted itself to its successful cattle breeding, that will allow you to taste the famous cheese & meat of the same name. 3 kms away from the village, La Maison de la Salers is dedicated to the local cow adapted to such rustic climate conditions.

Last but not least: a few kilometres away from Salers stands the village of Tournemire, another among the « Plus Beaux Villages de France » with the Anjony Castle that will help you understand the Auvergne rich History.

NEXT WEEK: (RE)DISCOVER LAFAYETTE’S HOMELAND

As you’ve been able to understand: Auvergne is just as rich in its Culture dimension as it is from a Nature point of view. Now, would you like to (re)discover Lafayette's homeland through a visit of his native castle? One of those best-kept secrets of France and a great occasion to suggest connoisseurs of France to visit the country of Victor Hugo off the beaten tracks. Allow another day out from the ecolodge.
